From December 7 to 8, the Eighth Confucius Institute Conference was held in Beijing, with more than 2,000 representatives from the Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms of 120 countries and regions. Vice President Walter T.Wiles from the University of Liberia, our partner in the joint-establishment of the Confucius Institute, Alpha.Bah, the foreign president of the Confucius Institute in Liberia, and Dr. Wu Dilong, Director of International Exchange Division of CSUST and Huang Jian, assistant dean of the School of Foreign Languages attended the meeting.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Yuan Guiren, Minister of Education.
It is reported that since 2004, China has leant from the experiences of Britain, France, Germany and other countries in promoting their national languages and explored the establishment of the non-profit educational institution, Confucius Institute to teach Chinese language and culture for the purpose of dissemination of the Chinese language and culture overseas. Up to now, more than 40 counties have integrated the teaching of the Chinese language into their national education system. China has established 440 Confucius Institutes and 646 Confucius Classrooms in 120 countries and regions. In 2013, Confucius Institutes and classrooms pride on the total number of registered learners of over 850,000, organizing various cultural activities more than 20,000 times.
