Dr. Y. L Mo is Professor at the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, University of Houston, Houston, Texas. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Hannover in Hannover, Germany. Before joining the University of Houston in September 2000, Dr. Mo was Professor of Civil Engineering at National Cheng-Kung University and Head of the Fundamental Research Section at the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering, Taiwan. He was Visiting Professor at Stanford University in 1998. He is founder and associate editor of the Challenge Journal of Structural Mechanics, editorial board member of several other journals, a member of the drafting panel of the American Concrete Institute design codes, past advisor of the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering and US delegate to the US-Japan workshops on earthquake engineering. He is the winner of medals for two best papers from the Journal of Concrete Structures and Materials and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He served as coordinator for major infrastructure research networks, and is the administrative and intellectual team builder and leader of the Thomas T.C. Hsu Structural Research Laboratory in Houston.
Professor Mo’s technical interests are smart materials and structures, multi-resolution distributed analytical simulations, network analysis, large-scale concrete structure testing and field investigations of the response of complex structures, on which he has more than 400 research publications, including 187 referred journal papers, many conference, keynote and prestige lectures, research reports, books and book chapters, magazine articles and earthquake field mission reports. Professor Mo received the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow Award from Germany, the Senior Faculty Research Excellence Award and the Outstanding Teaching Award from the University of Houston, invented or co-invented nine patents and has successfully supervised 6 post-doc, 23 PhD and over 40 Masters Theses as well as 25 visiting scholar studies. Many of his students hold significant positions in industry, academia and government around the world. He has contributed to projects for a number of international companies and other agencies such as Exxon Mobil, Fluor Corporation, Bechtel, Commonwealth Edison, KOPEC, Taipower, Ennexio, CMC, TSP, EPRI, NuScale, the Federal Highway Administration, TxDOT, The National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the Department of Education among others. He is currently leading a large project for the Department of Energy and the State Department of Transportation Agency. Professor Mo enjoys engineering consulting and holds a professional engineer license in Texas.
